How Much Does a Commercial Solar System Cost?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer—and that's good news.

Unlike a few years ago, California's utility tariffs have become much more stable, allowing businesses to invest at a pace that makes sense. You don't necessarily have to install your entire long-term vision today. Many customers choose to begin with a system that fits their current budget and expand later as their business grows or when battery storage becomes economically attractive.

Every recommendation begins with an evaluation of factors including:

  • Available investment budget
  • Federal tax credit eligibility
  • Depreciation strategy and tax appetite
  • Available roof or ground-mounted solar collection area
  • Utility rate schedule
  • Electrical load profile and operating hours
  • Cash purchase versus financing options
  • Long-term expansion plans

Our objective isn't to sell the largest system possible—it's to recommend the system that provides the strongest financial return for your business.

How Long Does the Process Take?

Every project is unique, but most follow a similar timeline.

Initial Evaluation

A preliminary review of your utility bills, energy usage, and site conditions can often be completed within about one week.

Engineering & Permitting

Complete engineering, utility documentation, and permit packages are typically prepared within approximately one month. Review times by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) vary considerably. Some jurisdictions issue permits within days, while others require a month or more depending on workload.

Installation

Construction may require anywhere from several days to several weeks, depending on project size and complexity. Scheduling also plays an important role, as we honor commitments to existing customers while coordinating around your business operations whenever possible.

Inspection & Utility Approval

Following successful inspection by the AHJ, the utility must grant Permission to Operate (PTO). While many approvals are completed in roughly a month, utility processing times vary and cannot be guaranteed.

How Do I Know My System Is Working Properly?

Every system we install includes online performance monitoring, allowing you to verify production and identify potential issues.

Our preferred designs use modern string inverter technology with sophisticated monitoring capabilities. After many years of field experience, we've found that many service calls involve failures of module-level power electronics such as optimizers and microinverters. Unless they provide a clear engineering advantage for a particular project, we generally favor simpler architectures that reduce long-term maintenance while still providing excellent system visibility.

Modern monitoring systems make it possible to quickly identify performance changes and diagnostic information without placing electronics beneath every solar module.

Most systems also generate automatic notifications if performance falls outside expected operating parameters. In many cases, equipment manufacturers provide remote diagnostic services that can identify developing issues before they become significant.

How Do Solar Warranties Work?

California requires contractors installing grid-connected photovoltaic systems to provide a minimum 10-year workmanship warranty. We stand behind every installation with that commitment, and we're proud that we have never had to return to correct a defective installation.

Equipment warranties are provided separately by each manufacturer. Typical warranty coverage includes:

  • Solar Panels
  • Product (manufacturing defect): generally 10-15 years
  • Performance warranty: typically 25-30 years
  • Inverters
  • Standard warranty: generally 12-15 years
  • Extended warranty options are available from most manufacturers at a modest additional cost.

Extended inverter warranties are often a worthwhile investment. Power inverters operate continuously under significant thermal stress, and the high-power electronic components they contain are subject to normal aging over time. Extended warranty programs typically provide repair or replacement coverage well beyond the standard warranty period, helping reduce long-term ownership costs.

When we recommend an extended warranty, it is based on practical field experience—not marketing hype. We'll explain the available options and help you decide whether the additional coverage makes sense for your application.

How Large Should My System Be?

The best system isn't necessarily the largest one. We analyze interval energy data, operating hours, utility tariffs, available incentives, and future expansion plans to determine the system size that delivers the highest long-term financial return. In many cases, a properly optimized 50 kW system can outperform a poorly matched 75 kW system.
